JOB TITLE: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

LOCATION: Riverdale Grade School

CHARACTERISTICS: Certified employee, contract dependent on full- or part-time status

REPORTS TO: Site Principal

SUPERVISES: In some cases, instructional assistants, tutors, and/or teaching interns

EVALUATION: Evaluated annually by the site Principal

 

OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION

 

To provide excellence in education by establishing an environment that facilitates student learning encourages the realization of personal potential and contributes to students’ development as mature, able, and responsible adults.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Possesses knowledge of District policies and regulations relating to areas of responsibility.
  2. Develops and implements activities that encourage students to be life-long learners.
  3. Adapts lessons for the purpose of implementing the IEP goals and meeting the special needs of students.
  4. Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting the teacher’s expectations.
  5. Assesses students’ social needs (e.g., behavioral, motor development, communication, etc.) and academic needs (e.g., developmental level, vocational abilities, etc.) for the purpose of special education eligibility, appropriate modifications, and/or program placement.
  6. Collaborates with school personnel, agents, and community agencies (e.g., social service agencies, caretakers, etc.) to develop and modify programs to maximize the quality of student outcomes, develop solutions, and plan curriculum.
  7. Prepares paperwork, reports, and verifications for school, District, and ODE as required or requested.
  8. Direct instructional assistants, volunteers, and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  9. Instructs students with individualized special needs for the purpose of developing appropriate academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
  10. Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
  11. Prepares teaching materials and reports (e.g., grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing documentation of teacher and student progress.
  12. Reports incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to District and/or school policies.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Administers medication, first aid, and/or health care requirements as may be required for the purpose of providing specialized treatment and/or monitoring medical conditions of students.
  2. Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in their work with disabled students.
  3. Participates in various meetings (e.g., parent conferences, in-service training, site meetings, etc.) to receive and/or provide information and/or meet legal requirements.

  4. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  5. Maintains professional competence through participation in district-provided in-service activities and/or self-selected professional growth activities related to job responsibilities.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.
  7. Adheres to all provisions of the currently negotiated Certified Contract.

 

 OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATES/LICENSES

  1. Valid Oregon Teaching License with a Special Education endorsement.

  2. Valid First Aid/CPR-AED Cards are preferred.

 

EDUCATIONAL/VOCATIONAL PREPARATION

  1. Appropriate Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.
  2. Successful teaching, intern teaching, or past teaching experience.
  3. Specialized training (i.e. restraint training, etc.) as needed.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

 

A moderate degree of physical stamina with occasional lifting of 10 to 50 pounds.  Ability to move freely to various locations within the classroom and other supervisory settings (cafeteria/playground).  Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and bending.  Frequent repetitive activities, including hands, arms, and legs, for clerical-related work.  Exposure to noise and activity in a school setting.  Exposure to outdoor weather conditions.TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

 

Salary, fringe benefits, working conditions, and the like are negotiated every three years between the Riverdale School Board and Riverdale Teachers’ Association.
